Blog Post #16

It is finally coming to an end in EDM 310. Even though in a way this is just the beginning for me going out and using everything I learned this semester in the real world. This fall I really had a lot on my plate and I honestly fought this class everyday in my head. To be completely honest, I didn’t want to spend the 9 hours each week and I just didn't give EDM a chance. But after realizing this is what I want to do for the rest of my life I better stop fighting and just do it. I want to be an educator and even more so I want to teach physical education in the 21st century. This class has taught me so many new tools necessary to create the environment I want for my students. I even started my own blog to keep everything on track.

For our very first blog post assignment this semester, Dr. Strange asked, "If You Built A School, What Would It Look Like?" After reading If I Built A School on Krissy Venosdale's blog, Venspired, I could imagine JUST what my school would like. If I had my wish of building a school and teaching I would be teaching Middle School, Physical Education. Even in my field of teaching, technology could be used to not only excite kids into learning skills they need, but also teach them how to enjoy being physically healthy. I want my students to know that being physical fit is very important in their life. I believe healthy people are happy people. EDM 310 is one of the few education classes I have taken so far and it has given me a better understanding of what my teaching philosophy will be. I can now answer these questions thoroughly thanks to this EDM 310 course.

I want my kids to be able to have access to the recourses to learn how to play sports and where, learn work outs, even find their favorite music to dance too. Of course in physical education more physical activity will be used than technology. But my methods will evolve into using technology in the classroom. Example: on rainy days I want to bring a big screen projector inside the gym and play up beat music and even play a dance video of Zumba. I’d like to use videos on proper ways to kick a soccer ball, or even how to serve a volleyball. Tools are so very important, hopefully in my time of teaching I will be able to use so many to show how physical education can be fun and exciting. The learning environment for teaching is so important. An upbeat classroom with fun and exciting activities will get kids motivated and PUMPED! I want noise and happiness in my classroom. I’m lucky to be able to teach a subject that we can be loud and exciting. So using technology in my field will only approve healthy living kids.I want to know my student's interests and passions, so I can create lessons that they will be engaged and interested in. I want my classroom to be colorful and full of technology. iPads, SMARTBoards, laptops, and Nintendos (thank you Ms. Cassidy's First Graders for that idea) will be available for my students.

My students will not be taught the way I was. No more “black top Friday”. My students will learn collaboratively with their classmates on sports skills. They will be encouraged to ask questions when they are unsure of something of a certain sport. I will incorporate blogging into my classroom, I love how this is a unique way to enhance literacy skills and give my students an opportunity to know exactly what sports skills we will be learning that day. Discovery Ed has visuals to help teach them in a different way from the old school copying definitions in the back of the book. Why not get outside and learn hands on as well the definition of kicking a ball after watching video and even step by steps.

I am taking with me so many tools and resources from this course that I plan to try and incorporate in physical education. Dr. Strange challenged his students to find different technology tools and to learn about ones he introduced to us. This has been a class very different from any other course I have taken. EDM 310 was more about independent learning and projects, I find more useful then the "burp-back" education I am still experiencing in a few of my college course! Education has changed a lot from the years I have been out of school and I know it is constantly changing. I will take everything I have learned in this course and continue to use and find new technology tools to give my students the education they deserve. Have to see you leave EDM, but love for you to walk away!
